HEALTHY PEOPLE, HEALTHY PLANET

This category lists sources of information that will enable individuals to better understand the threat to our sustainability and how to make food choices that will benefit them as well as help to clean up our environment.

1. "Earth in the Balance" by Al Gore. It's truly inspiring that a sitting senator was willing to write, "We must make the rescue of the environment the central organizing principle for civilization." In his 1992 book, Al Gore also wrote:

I have become very impatient with my own tendency to put a finger to the political winds and proceed cautiously.... Every time I pause to consider whether I have gone too far out on a limb, I look at the new facts [on the environment crisis] that continue to pour in from around the world and conclude that I have not gone far enough.... The time has long since come to take more political risks--and endure more political criticism--by proposing tougher, more effective solutions and fighting hard for their enactments. And the buzz on the street is that Gore actually wrote those words himself.

2. "Plan B 2.0", by Lester R. Brown, president of Earth Policy Institute, surveys the worldwide environmental devastation wrought by breakneck industrialization and the heedless, auto-centric, "throwaway economy. Fortunately, Brown says, "all the problems we face can be dealt with using existing technologies," at a manageable cost. He spends most of the book exploring advances in sustainable agriculture, wildlife and resource conservation, renewable energy, hyper-efficient cars, mass transit and appliances, and recycling. Available in bookstores. www.earth-policy.org.

3. "Diet for a New America", by John Robbins. Robbins covers factory farming, health & nutrition, and the environmental benefits of vegetarian diets. The content has been meticulously researched, with Robbins offering dozens of pages of footnotes. If you're looking for a book with solid, hard proof of how vegetarians easily get plenty of protein, why meat is the #1 killer in the U.S., or how badly farm animals are treated, you won't do better than this volume. Diet for a New America has been credited with launching the second wave of vegetarianism in the U.S. when it was published (and nominated for a Pulitzer) in 1987. It's still timely today. www.foodrevolution.org.

4. "The China Study", by T. Colin Campbell, PhD and Thomas M. Campbell II. Quoting David Klein, Publisher/Editor of Living Nutrition Magazine; "The China Study is the most important book on nutrition and health to come out in the last 75 years. Everyone should read t, and it should be the model for all nutritional programs taught at universities. The reading is engrossing if not astounding. The science is conclusive. Dr. Campbell's integrity and commitment to truthful nutrition education shine through.

5. Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) has been a strong advocate for nutrition and health, food safety, alcohol policy, and sound science since 1971. CSP is a consumer advocacy organization whose twin missions are to conduct innovative research and advocacy programs in health and nutrition, and to provide consumers with current, useful information about their health and well-being. www.cspinet.org.

6. The International Vegetarian Union (IVU), founded in 1908 when the first World Vegetarian Congress was held in Dresden, Germany. The idea for IVU came from the French Vegetarian Society; the first Congress was organized internationally by the British Society. Since then a series of World Congresses have been held all around the world. This is a non-profit organization that can be used to find some unique vegetarian recipes for those seeking to enjoy their vegetarian diet choices. They can be found at www.IVU.org.

7. Worldwatch Institute; offers a unique blend of interdisciplinary research, global focus, and accessible writing that has made it a leading source of information on the interactions among key environmental, social, and economic trends. Their work revolves around the transition to an environmentally sustainable and socially just society - and how to achieve it. www.worldwatch.org

8. The World Future Society; The Society serves as a neutral clearinghouse for ideas about the future. Including forecasts, recommendations, and alternative scenarios. These ideas help people to anticipate what may happen in the next 5, 10, or more years ahead. They hope that when people can visualize a better future, then they can begin to create it. The Society includes 25,000 people in more than 80 countries--from Argentina to Zimbabwe. Members come from all walks of life. They include sociologists, scientists, corporate planners, educators, students, and retirees. They are thinking people who seek a better future for themselves and society. www.wfs.org

9. When your reading has compelled you to leave a "lighter footprint" and you would like to pursue a more "green" lifestyle check out Woody Harrelson's Website. www.voiceyourself.com This website will keep you current with all that is going on nationally with regard to the environment and also is a great source of information for those of you choosing to go green. A very worthwhile read.

CANCER COVER-UP

1. "Politics in Healing" by Daniel Haley is a book with information about alternative treatments that have been intentionally withheld from public knowledge. It explains who has prevented the truth from being revealed and how they got away with it. A must read for people that wonder why "everyone" doesn't know about this or that treatment option.

2. "Racketeering in Medicine", The Suppression of Alternatives, by Dr. James P. Carter. Exposes how Americans are being deprived of effective, economical treatments because those treatments are not highly profitable for surgeons and pharmaceutical companies.

3. "Dr. Max Gerson: Healing the Hopeless" by, Howard Straus. Howard Straus, the grandson of Dr. Max Gerson, discusses the struggles this medical pioneer faced as he challenged orthodox medicine with his nutritional protocol. The biography follows Dr. Gerson through Nazi persecution, then persecution in the United States from the medical establishment, the continuation of his work despite the opposition, his questionable death and finally the present, where daughter Charlotte Gerson and the Gerson Institute work to continue his legacy and vision. His most famous patient was Dr. Albert Schweitzer, who was 75 years old when Gerson cured him of advanced diabetes. Schweitzer returned to his African hospital, won the Nobel Prize, and worked past age 90. Schweitzer wrote, "I see in Dr. Gerson one of the most eminent geniuses in the history of medicine."

4. "When Healing Becomes A Crime" by Kenny Ausubel. The story of Harry Hoxsey and his fight with the medical establishment over unorthodox cancer treatment. A medical drama and an important historical episode in the development of alternative medicine in the twentieth century.

5. "Living Proof" by Michael Gearin-Tosh is another book with a new twist regarding alternative treatments. Professor Gearin-Tosh of Oxford University In Oxford, England tears into the "diagnosis" that is given him by the expert oncologists in England and the U.S. His prognosis was quite grim, being diagnosed with an aggressive form of multiple myeloma. The best-case scenario he was given was a "possible" 3-year life extension with treatment (Chemo & radiation). This book was written 8 years after he received that news. He gives new interesting insight that reveals the great difference between the medical community's definitions of common English words (diagnosis) and our traditional understanding of those words. The book also describes the treatments that he is using to assure his FAR longer than expected abundant life.
